Many with ADHD feel "too much." But what if that sensitivity is high intuition? A specialist ADHD coach explores the powerful link and the recent surge in adult diagnoses.
Have you spent your life feeling "too much"? Too sensitive? Too loud? Too emotional? Do you walk into a room and instantly feel the mood, able to read people in a way that others can't?
If so, you’re not alone.
In recent years, we've seen a massive surge in ADHD diagnoses in the UK. The most significant spike has been among adult women, with some clinics reporting a 400% increase in women seeking a diagnosis. For many, it's a lightbulb moment – a name for a lifetime of feeling "different."
But the label "Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder" is so often focused on the "deficit." It misses the point.
As an ADHD coach with personal and professional experience, I can tell you that what is often dismissed as a "disorder" is, in fact, a different wiring.
And that wiring comes with some incredible gifts.
The one no one talks about?
Your intuition!
I Bet You Don't Know Why You're a "Human Barometer"
Many of my clients with ADHD describe themselves as "human barometers." They can feel a shift in the atmosphere the second they enter a room. They can sense when a friend is upset before a single word is spoken.
This isn't magic. It's your brain.
The "hunter vs. farmer" theory is a brilliant way to understand this.
The "farmer" brain is neurotypical—methodical, steady, focused on a linear path.
The "hunter" brain (the ADHD brain) is wired for a different job. It's designed to constantly scan the environment, notice every tiny change, and react in an instant.
It’s a pattern-recognition machine. While others are filtering things out, your brain is taking it all in—sights, sounds, and subtle shifts in emotion or body language.
This constant, rapid processing of data is what we call intuition.
It's not a flaw; it's a highly evolved skill.
The "Curse" of the ADHD Superpower
Of course, there's a flip side. Being a "super-sensor" in a world that isn't built for you is exhausting.
It's why you get overstimulated in noisy, bright, or crowded spaces.
It's why you feel others' emotions so deeply, sometimes to the point that you can't separate their feelings from your own (Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria, or RSD, is a huge part of this).
It's why you feel drained, overwhelmed, and burnt out, while others seem to be coping just fine.
Your sensitivity is your superpower, but without the right tools, it can feel like a curse.
You Don't Need to Be "Cured." You Need to Be Harnessed.
My work as an ADHD coach isn't about "fixing" you or making your brain "normal." My "normal" is boring. The goal is to help you understand your unique wiring and give you the tools to manage the overwhelm so you can finally use your gift.
This includes:
Understanding your nervous system and what regulates it.
Creating practical boundaries to protect your energy.
Reframing your sensitivity as the strength it is.
Using tools like EMDR to process past traumas or beliefs that tell you you're "too much."
You don't need to be less sensitive. You just need to learn how to build a world that doesn't punish you for your gifts.
Your Intuition is Your Guide
Your ADHD brain is not broken. It is powerful. That intuition that has been your constant companion, that "gut feeling" you've learned to trust—that is your strength.
If you are newly diagnosed, or have felt this way your entire life, know this: you are not "too much." You are a hunter in a farmer's world, and it's time to learn how to thrive.
I specialise in this work. If you're ready to stop feeling overwhelmed and start harnessing your superpower, I invite you to get in touch.
